Explore the differences between plaster, quartz and pebble finishes. We cover the materials, natural variations and the resurfacing process.
Choosing a pool interior
When a pool interior begins to show its age, resurfacing gives you a chance to choose a new finish as well as address the condition of the existing surface. Plaster, quartz and pebble are the interior finishes we offer, and each provides a different look and feel. The right selection depends on what you want from the finished pool and the options discussed during your renovation assessment. Plaster and pebble are natural materials, so color variation and normal wear are not considered defects. That distinction is worth understanding before choosing a finish and setting expectations for its appearance over time.
The impact of Las Vegas water
Local water conditions are another consideration when planning pool surface care. The Las Vegas Valley Water District describes valley tap water as very hard, measuring 280 ppm total hardness, or 16 grains per gallon, with 75 ppm calcium. The minerals come from the Colorado River through Lake Mead. Hard water leaves calcium scale, particularly along the waterline tile. If calcium buildup is affecting the tile line, we can assess the surface and discuss tile calcium removal as a separate service. Resurfacing and calcium removal address different work, so the condition of the existing pool helps determine which service is appropriate.
Renovation rules and limits
If a project includes a new pool, spa or water feature, Southern Nevada’s surface area rules need to be considered during planning. Under Las Vegas Valley Water District service rules, single family pools, spas and water features permitted after September 1, 2022, may not exceed 600 square feet of combined surface area. Outdoor ornamental water features over 10 square feet are not allowed. These limits are relevant when a renovation involves additions or a new permitted design. Our process includes an assessment and planning before work is scheduled, so the project scope and applicable requirements can be reviewed in advance.
The resurfacing process
Resurfacing starts with an assessment of the existing pool and a discussion of finish selections. We then prepare a written proposal covering the agreed work. Once the proposal is approved and the project is scheduled, the work moves forward through preparation, application of the selected finish, startup and handoff. When a project involves draining pool water, it must be discharged into the sanitary sewer, usually through the home’s sewer clean out, rather than into the street or a storm drain. For new plaster, startup chemistry follows the plaster manufacturer’s schedule. We include that schedule in the startup process so the pool can be handed back with the appropriate instructions.
How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps
We handle pool resurfacing with plaster, quartz and pebble finishes throughout the Las Vegas valley. Our renovation services also include waterline tile and coping replacement, stain treatment, acid washing and equipment pad upgrades. Rosa Delgado reviews every renovation proposal. Before work begins, we provide a written proposal so you can review the scope and cost. Resurfacing and tile work carry a two year workmanship warranty. Because plaster and pebble are natural materials, normal wear and color variation are not workmanship defects. Financing is available for resurfacing, renovation and equipment replacement, subject to credit approval through a third party lender. We can assess your pool, explain the available finish options and outline the work involved before you decide how to proceed.
