Protecting your pipes onFreezing winter nights
We perform freeze protection checks each November so your automation works before the cold arrives. If a freezing night damages a pipe or fitting, our technicians can repair it.
- November freeze sensor checks
- Freeze damage and leak repairs
Why cold weather mattersFor valley pool owners
According to the National Weather Service, the Las Vegas valley experiences about ten nights a year at freezing temperatures. These cold snaps usually happen in December and January.
Moving water rarely freezes in our climate, but still water inside exposed pipes, filters, and heaters can freeze solid. When the ice expands, it can crack the equipment.
To prevent damage, pool circulation must run during these freezing nights. A working freeze sensor turns the pump on automatically when the air gets cold.

What we look for duringThe November check
We inspect your equipment pad in the fall to confirm the system is ready for winter nights.
- Test the air temperature freeze sensor
- Verify automation freeze protection settings
- Check the mechanical pump run schedule
- Inspect exposed plumbing pipes and valves
- Look over the gas heater or heat pump
- Record all findings in the visit report
Call us when you seeSigns of freeze damage
Call us if you see these signs of trouble at the equipment pad after a cold night.
Cracked pipe or fitting
Ice expansion can split PVC plumbing. You might see a visible crack or a slow drip when the pump turns back on.
Water at the equipment pad
Puddles forming under the equipment can point to a failed seal or a cracked manifold that gave way overnight.
Pump will not prime
If the pump basket is empty and the motor runs dry, a cracked suction line might be letting air into the system.
Heater leaking
A leak from the heater after a cold night can point to freeze damage inside the unit.
Filter housing cracked
The tank can split if the water inside freezes. Our technician inspects the damage and gives you a written estimate for the repair.
Automation fault
An error code on the control panel after a cold night can point to a freeze sensor that failed to trigger the pump.
Freeze protection questions
All QuestionsIs freeze damage covered by my equipment warranty?
Kingfisher’s warranty excludes freeze damage when the circulation was turned off. This is why testing the sensors in November matters.
How many freezing nights does the valley get?
The National Weather Service notes that Las Vegas gets about ten freezing nights a year, mostly in December and January.
How do I know if my freeze sensor works?
Kingfisher checks freeze sensors and automation settings each November, and the technician notes the results in your emailed visit report.
What if my pool is drained for the winter?
We offer pool closing and winterization for owners who leave the valley for the season. The technician balances the water, shuts down and drains the equipment where needed, and sets the freeze protection.
Test your sensorsBefore the cold arrives
Call us to schedule a freeze protection check or to repair a cracked pipe. We make sure your system survives the December drop.
