Find out how to maintain your hot tub filters. We detail the schedule for rinsing, deep cleaning and buying replacements for your spa.
The role of your spa filter
If your hot tub is used regularly, its filter needs attention as part of the normal care routine. The filter is one part of maintaining the spa, but water clarity alone does not tell you whether the water is properly maintained. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that clear water can still carry germs, so water testing remains important alongside cleaning and filter care. Keeping to a regular filter schedule helps you manage this routine instead of waiting until the cartridge is due for replacement.
Routine cleaning schedules
Jacuzzi recommends rinsing spa filters weekly, deep cleaning them monthly and replacing them every 12 to 18 months. These intervals give you a useful schedule to follow for ordinary use. Rinsing is the regular task, while the monthly deep clean and eventual replacement are separate parts of filter care. If you have a detached hot tub and would rather include this work in a service visit, we can quote weekly spa maintenance after looking at the spa.
Hard water and your spa
In Southern Nevada, the water used to refill a spa contains a high level of minerals. The Las Vegas Valley Water District lists local tap water at 280 ppm total hardness, including 75 ppm calcium, and identifies it as very hard. The minerals come from the Colorado River through Lake Mead. Hard water leaves calcium scale at the tile line, in heaters and on salt cells. These local water conditions are worth keeping in mind when planning general spa maintenance, particularly if your spa has a heater or salt chlorine generator that needs inspection.
When to replace the cartridge
According to Jacuzzi, spa filter cartridges commonly follow a replacement schedule of every 12 to 18 months under normal use. Cleaning and replacement are not the same task, so regular rinsing and monthly deep cleaning do not remove the need to replace a cartridge when it reaches the end of its usual service interval. If you are unsure when the cartridge was last replaced, our technicians can look at the filter during a service visit and discuss its condition and the maintenance it needs.
