- Acid Wash or Resurfacing?
Deciding on anAcid wash or new finish
Stains and scale build up on pool interiors over time. We explain when a wash can clear the surface and when you need new plaster.
- Acid wash from $550
- Written project proposals
Compare the benefits of an acid wash versus resurfacing your pool. We explain the process and how to address stains and calcium scale.
Addressing stains and scale
If your pool plaster has stains or the waterline has developed a stubborn buildup, you may be wondering whether an acid wash will solve the problem or whether the surface needs to be replaced. The answer depends on the condition of the existing finish. An acid wash is an option for treating certain stains and surface discoloration, while tile calcium removal addresses mineral buildup along the waterline. These are different services, so it helps to look at what needs attention before deciding on the work.
When resurfacing is required
An acid wash is not a substitute for a worn or deteriorating pool interior. If the plaster is flaking, rough to the touch or worn enough to expose the underlying gunite, resurfacing is the more appropriate option. We assess the existing surface before recommending either service. If resurfacing makes sense, available finishes include plaster, quartz and pebble. Each project begins with an assessment and a written proposal outlining the work. Plaster and pebble are natural materials, so color variation and normal wear are not considered defects.
Climate and evaporation factors
Las Vegas pools deal with a climate that makes water management an ongoing part of ownership. The National Weather Service reports an average July high of 104.5°F, and about 78 days each year reach 100°F. The Southern Nevada Water Authority estimates that an average in-ground pool loses 48.6 gallons per square foot annually through evaporation. Topping up with local hard water also adds calcium over time. The Las Vegas Valley Water District describes valley tap water as very hard, and that water leaves calcium scale at the tile line, in heaters and on salt cells. These conditions help explain why a pool surface may need attention, but the condition of the finish determines which service is suitable.
Draining for an acid wash
Acid washing and resurfacing involve draining the pool before the surface work and refilling it afterward. Drainage needs to follow local requirements. The Las Vegas Valley Water District and Southern Nevada Water Authority specify that pool water must go into the sanitary sewer, usually through the home’s sewer cleanout, rather than into the street or a storm drain. We account for the work involved when preparing the written proposal, so you can review the scope before the project begins.
How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps
We provide acid washing starting at $550, while resurfacing and finish options are quoted after an assessment. Our services include plaster, quartz and pebble finishes, along with waterline tile and coping replacement when those areas need work. We explain the proposed work and provide a written estimate before any renovation begins. Nothing extra is done without your approval. Resurfacing and tile work include a two year workmanship warranty. If you are unsure whether the pool needs a wash or a new finish, we can assess the surface and explain the options for your property in the Las Vegas valley.
