InterNACHI notes that pool pumps and filters commonly last around 10 years. Learn how long you can expect your pool equipment to run in Southern Nevada.

The lifespan of pumps and filters

When a pool pump or filter starts giving you trouble, one of the first questions is whether it is time to repair it or replace it. InterNACHI and the US Department of Energy report that pumps and filters commonly last around 10 years, depending on run time and water balance. That is a general guide, not a promise that every unit will last that long or a reason to replace equipment simply because it has reached that age.

If you are replacing a pool filter pump, there is also a federal efficiency standard to keep in mind. Since July 19, 2021, new pool filter pumps must meet US Department of Energy efficiency requirements. In practice, that means variable speed pumps for most residential pools. The standard is relevant when selecting replacement equipment, while the condition of your current pump helps determine whether replacement is needed.

Heaters and salt cells

Other equipment has its own typical service life. Gas pool heaters commonly last around 8 to 11 years, while salt cells commonly last around 3 to 7 years. These estimates depend on run time and water balance, so the age of a heater or salt cell should be considered alongside its current condition.

Water quality is also worth keeping in mind when caring for this equipment in Southern Nevada. The Las Vegas Valley Water District describes local tap water as very hard, with 280 ppm total hardness and 75 ppm calcium. The minerals come from the Colorado River through Lake Mead. Hard water leaves calcium scale at the tile line, in heaters and on salt cells, making these areas relevant to routine pool maintenance.

When to repair or replace

Equipment age is one part of a repair decision, but it should not be the only part. A repair may be a poor value when parts are no longer available or the equipment has failed repeatedly. Comparing the cost of repair with the cost of replacement gives the homeowner a clearer basis for deciding what to do next.

In Nevada, residential pool and spa work performed for a fee requires a contractor’s license under NRS 624.920. Classification A-10e, described in NAC 624.150, covers maintenance and repair of pools and spas, including pumps, filters, heaters, timers, controls and lights. That classification helps identify the licensed scope for this kind of work.

How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps with repairs

When you request a repair visit from us, the diagnostic visit costs $85. We credit that amount in full toward the repair when you approve it within 30 days. Our technician explains what failed, what the repair would cost and what replacement would cost, so you can compare the options before deciding. We recommend replacement only when age, parts availability or repeated failures make a repair a poor value.

We provide a written estimate before any repair begins, and we do not do additional work without your approval. We repair pool and spa equipment and install Pentair, Hayward and Jandy equipment. Repair labor carries a 90 day warranty. For new equipment we install, the installation labor warranty is one year, in addition to the manufacturer’s parts warranty. We also register the equipment we install.

Our weekly maintenance includes checking filter pressure and looking over the pump, filter, heater and timer or automation for leaks, noises or error codes. On salt pools, we inspect the salt cell every three months. Our Full Care Plus plan costs $189 a month and includes an attached spa, four filter cleanings a year, quarterly salt cell inspection and cleaning, and 10% off repairs. These visits provide regular opportunities to note equipment concerns and discuss whether further service is needed.
