Since July 2021, the US DOE requires new pool filter pumps to meet federal efficiency standards. Learn why variable-speed pumps are now the standard.

The federal efficiency standard

If your pool pump needs replacing, you may find that a newer model differs from the equipment you have now. The US Department of Energy’s federal efficiency standard for new pool filter pumps has applied since July 19, 2021. In practice, the standard means variable speed pumps for most residential pools.

That rule is useful to know when discussing a replacement, but it does not by itself tell you whether an existing pump needs to be replaced. The first step is to understand what has failed and what it would cost to repair the current equipment.

Replacing a failed pump

A pump problem does not automatically mean a new pump is the right choice. InterNACHI and the US Department of Energy report that pool pumps and filters commonly last around 10 years, depending on run time and water balance. That is a general lifespan, not a deadline for replacement. The equipment’s condition, parts availability and history of repeated failures are also relevant when weighing repair against replacement.

Paid pool and spa repair work in Nevada requires a contractor’s license under NRS 624.920. Classification A-10e, covered by NAC 624.150, includes maintenance and repair of pools and spas, including pumps, filters, heaters, timers, controls and lights. Homeowners can check that a contractor’s license covers the work being arranged.

NV Energy has offered discounts on qualifying variable speed pumps in Southern Nevada through approved contractors. The amounts and availability change, so homeowners should check current program details rather than assume a discount is available for a particular installation.

How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps with equipment

We repair pool and spa equipment, including pumps and motors, filters, heaters, automation and controls. When you contact us about a pump that is not working properly, our repair diagnostic visit is $85. That amount is credited in full toward the repair when you approve it within 30 days.

After assessing the equipment, our technician explains what failed, what a repair would cost and what replacement would cost. We recommend replacement only when the equipment’s age, parts availability or repeated failures make repair a poor value. Age alone is not enough to make that decision. Before a repair begins, we provide a written estimate, and we do not carry out additional work without your approval.

We hold Nevada contractor license 0000000, classifications A-10 and A-10e. We install Pentair, Hayward and Jandy equipment. New equipment we install carries a one year warranty on installation labor, along with the manufacturer’s parts warranty. We register the equipment we install, and repair labor carries a 90 day warranty.

Regular maintenance gives us opportunities to look over the equipment between repair visits. During weekly service, we check the pump, filter, heater and timer or automation for leaks, noises or error codes, and check filter pressure. We also empty the skimmer and pump baskets. These checks help us note equipment concerns that may need further attention. Filter cleaning is billed separately unless included in the customer’s plan. Cartridge filter cleaning is $95 and DE filter cleaning is $115. Both are included four times a year with our Full Care Plus plan.
