Southern Nevada pool barriers follow a regional standard that requires self-closing and self-latching gates. Learn how to secure your pool area.

Regional barrier standards

If you have a pool in your backyard, the gate is part of keeping the area secure. In Southern Nevada, pool barriers follow a regional standard that requires gates to be self closing and self latching. The gate needs to close on its own and the latch needs to engage without someone pushing it shut. These requirements matter for everyday access to the pool, not just when a property is first built.

For homeowners planning a new pool, local rules also affect the design. Under Las Vegas Valley Water District service rules, single family pools, spas and water features permitted after September 1, 2022, may not exceed 600 square feet of combined surface area. Outdoor ornamental water features over 10 square feet are not allowed. These limits are worth considering early when planning a backyard project.

Safety on public pools

Public and commercial pools have additional requirements. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act requires anti entrapment drain covers on public pools and spas. These covers are a specific part of the safety requirements for shared aquatic facilities.

Water quality also deserves attention, even when the pool looks clean. The CDC explains that clear water can still carry germs, so appearance alone does not measure of water quality. Its guidance calls for free chlorine of at least 1 ppm in pools, or at least 2 ppm when cyanuric acid is used. For hot tubs, the recommended minimum is 3 ppm free chlorine, and the water temperature should not exceed 104°F. Regular testing helps operators check the water against these guidelines.

Maintaining a secure backyard

Gate hardware is part of the regular upkeep of a pool area. It is worth paying attention to whether the gate closes fully and the latch catches as intended. The National Weather Service’s Las Vegas climate records show that July has an average high of 104.5°F, with about 78 days a year reaching 100°F. The monsoon usually brings storms, strong winds and blowing dust in July and August, so outdoor areas may need attention after rough weather.

Access arrangements matter when a pool technician visits, too. Dogs should be secured before the scheduled service day so our technicians can reach the pool and equipment safely. A clear arrangement for gate access helps the visit go smoothly while keeping pets where their owners left them.

How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps with safety

When we service a residential pool, we treat the gate as part of the visit. Our technicians close and latch gates behind them, and pets stay where the customer left them. We ask customers to secure dogs before the service day so our team can access the pool and equipment pad safely.

Our weekly maintenance includes water testing, routine chemicals, skimming, brushing, vacuuming where needed and an equipment look over, depending on the selected plan. We email a visit report after every weekly visit, including water readings, chemicals added, tasks completed, technician notes, equipment observations and a pool photo. If something on the checklist is missed, call us within 48 hours and the technician comes back to put it right.

We also build small to medium custom pools and handle permits through the city or county. Our team works within the applicable Southern Nevada rules for new pools and water features. Each May, before swim season, we hold a free water safety morning with a local swim school and service the pools of two community centers’ summer programs at no charge.
