Residential pool and spa work for a fee requires a Nevada contractor license. Learn about the A-10 classifications required for pool service and repair.

State requirements for pool work

When you hire someone to build, repair or maintain a pool, it is worth checking that the contractor holds the right Nevada license. Under NRS 624.920, residential pool and spa work performed for a fee requires a Nevada contractor’s license. This requirement is relevant to homeowners arranging new construction, resurfacing and paid equipment work.

The Nevada State Contractors Board sets classifications for different types of contracting work. Under NAC 624.150, classification A-10e covers maintenance and repair of pools and spas, including pumps, filters, heaters, timers, controls and lights. Checking the classification helps you understand whether the contractor is licensed for the type of pool work being proposed. You can also ask for the contractor’s license number before authorizing a job.

Safety codes and equipment rules

Licensing is one part of choosing a contractor. Pool work also needs to account for applicable safety rules and the condition of the equipment. If you notice electrical sparks, a burning smell or water near electrical equipment, keep everyone away. Turn the equipment off at the breaker only if it is safe to do so, and call NV Energy or 911 if there is any danger. If you smell gas at a heater, leave the area and call Southwest Gas and 911 from a safe place.

There are also federal requirements for new pool filter pumps. The US Department of Energy states that pumps installed since July 19, 2021, must meet federal efficiency standards. In practice, this means variable-speed pumps for most residential pools. Southern Nevada pool barriers follow the regional standard, which requires gates to be self-closing and self-latching.

Commercial pool licensing

Commercial facilities have additional requirements beyond those that apply to an ordinary residential pool. Pool companies serving permitted aquatic facilities must be registered with the Southern Nevada Health District. Qualified operators at those facilities must hold a national pool operator certification.

The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act also requires anti-entrapment drain covers on public pools and spas. If you manage an HOA pool, an apartment complex, a hotel or another permitted aquatic facility, ask prospective service providers about their registration and operator qualifications. These are useful items to verify before agreeing on a maintenance or repair arrangement.

How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps

We hold Nevada contractor license 0000000, classifications A-10 and A-10e, and carrying insurance. Our founder, Rosa Delgado, grew up in Las Vegas and spent ten years working as a pool technician, first cleaning residential routes and later repairing pumps, filters and heaters. She founded Kingfisher in Las Vegas in 2008.

We have sixteen technicians, each background-checked before hire and holding the Certified Pool & Spa Operator certification. Kingfisher pays for the certification course and is registered with the Southern Nevada Health District as a pool company serving commercial facilities.

Before a repair, one-time service or renovation begins, Kingfisher provides a written estimate. A repair diagnostic visit costs $85, credited in full toward the repair if the customer approves it within 30 days. The technician explains what failed, what the repair will cost and what replacement would cost. Replacement is recommended only when the equipment’s age, parts availability or repeated failures make repair poor value. Repair labor carries a 90-day workmanship warranty. When comparing contractors, ask for the license classification, a written estimate and an explanation of the proposed work before approving the job.
