When your equipment getsLoud and noisy

A noisy pool pump can point to internal wear or a suction restriction. We diagnose the motor and wet end to find the problem.

Loud pump noises can point to failing motor bearings, restricted water flow or suction leaks. We inspect the equipment pad to find the cause and repair it.

What you may notice

You might notice a high-pitched screeching or grinding noise coming from the equipment pad. The pump might produce a rattling sound near the basket housing, or a continuous hum without actually moving any water. You might notice a gurgling noise accompanied by air bubbles under the clear pump lid. The filter gauge might read higher than it usually does. These sounds can point to the equipment struggling against a restriction or drawing in air. The sounds can be a sign of internal wear inside the motor or the wet end of the pump.

Common causes in the valley

The Las Vegas environment creates challenging conditions for outdoor equipment. InterNACHI and the US DOE note that pumps commonly last around 10 years, depending on run time and water balance. NWS Las Vegas data shows a July average high of 104.5 degrees, and about 78 days a year reach 100 degrees. The monsoon brings storms, strong winds and blowing dust in July and August. Dust and debris can fill the skimmer baskets, which can point to a restriction that starves the pump of water and causes rattling noises.

What you can safely check

You can perform a few safe visual checks around the equipment pad. Check whether the skimmer and pump baskets are full of debris. Check whether the water level looks low in the pool. Check whether the filter gauge reads higher than it usually does. Look for visible drips at the equipment pad under the pump. Look for any error code on a display. Do not open or adjust the pump. Electrical sparks, burning smells or water near electrical equipment: turn the equipment off at the breaker only if it is safe to do so, keep everyone away, and call NV Energy or 911 if there is any danger.

When to call a technician

When the pump noise changes, you can schedule a diagnostic visit. A humming pump can point to a failed motor or capacitor. We schedule urgent repairs, such as equipment that has stopped circulating the water, a leak at the equipment pad, or a failed spa or pool heater, ahead of routine work during business hours. The pump moves the water for the entire system, and a failure stops circulation. A technician can safely evaluate the electrical components and determine the extent of the mechanical wear.

How Kingfisher diagnoses it

We charge an $85 diagnostic fee, which is credited in full toward the repair when approved within 30 days. We provide a written estimate first. The technician inspects the motor, the wet end and the suction lines. The technician explains what failed, what a repair costs and what replacement would cost. We recommend replacement only when age, parts availability or repeated failures make a repair poor value. The US DOE rule enacted on July 19, 2021, states new pool filter pumps must meet federal efficiency standards, which in practice means variable-speed pumps for most residential pools. We repair most major brands, including Pentair, Hayward, Jandy, Raypak and Sta-Rite. We offer a 90-day warranty on repair labor, and one year on installation labor plus the manufacturer parts warranty for new equipment.

Questions about pump noise

All Questions
Is a screeching pump motor dangerous?

If you see electrical sparks or smell burning, turn the equipment off at the breaker only if safe, keep everyone away, and call NV Energy or 911 if there is danger.

Do you repair pool pumps?

Yes, we repair pumps and motors from most major brands, including Pentair, Hayward and Jandy. We provide a written estimate before any repair begins.

Does a noisy pump mean I need a new one?

Not necessarily. A technician will explain what failed, such as motor bearings or a capacitor, and compare the repair cost to a replacement.
