The National Weather Service reports about 10 freezing nights a year in Las Vegas. Learn how to protect your pool equipment from freeze damage.
Las Vegas winter temperatures
Las Vegas winters are generally mild, but pool owners should not overlook the occasional freezing night. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas reports that about 10 nights a year fall to freezing, mostly in December and January. Most pools in the valley run throughout the year, so winter care usually means continuing routine maintenance while paying attention to freeze protection.
Water that looks clear still needs testing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that clear water can carry germs, and recommends free chlorine of at least 1 part per million in pools, or at least 2 parts per million when cyanuric acid is used. Keeping up with the normal testing schedule remains useful even when swimming is less frequent.
Protecting equipment from freeze damage
On the few freezing nights in the Las Vegas area, circulation must run. Kingfisher Pool & Spa checks freeze sensors and automation settings each November as part of its freeze protection service. This is a useful seasonal check for owners who keep their pools operating through winter, particularly when the property will be vacant.
It is also worth paying attention to the condition of the equipment before cold weather arrives. Pumps, filters and heaters have finite working lives, but age alone does not determine whether replacement is needed. Kingfisher inspects equipment and explains repair options when a problem is found. Freeze damage is excluded from our repair warranty when circulation was turned off.
Winter chemistry and maintenance
Even with cooler weather, water chemistry remains part of pool care. The CDC recommends maintaining pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Regular testing provides a record of the readings and helps identify when routine chemicals are needed. A technician can also check the water level and look over the pump, filter, heater and timer or automation for leaks, noises or error codes.
Evaporation does not stop being relevant in winter. The Southern Nevada Water Authority estimates that an average in-ground pool loses 48.6 gallons per square foot per year, while a pool cover cuts evaporation by about 90 percent. The Las Vegas Valley Water District describes local tap water as very hard, at 280 parts per million of total hardness, or 16 grains per gallon, with 75 parts per million of calcium. Topping up with hard water raises calcium over time, and scale can appear at the tile line, in heaters and on salt cells.
Pool closing and winterization
Most Las Vegas pools operate year round, but owners leaving a property for an extended period may want a closing and winterization service. Kingfisher balances the water, shuts down and drains equipment where needed, protects the lines, installs the cover and sets freeze protection. Pool opening and startup service is also available for properties that have been left closed, including vacation homes and homes that have changed owners.
Hot tubs need their own maintenance schedule. Jacuzzi recommends draining, cleaning and refilling a spa every three to four months under normal use. The CDC recommends free chlorine of at least 3 parts per million in hot tubs and a water temperature no higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Kingfisher offers detached hot tub service and spa care for properties with an attached spa.
How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps
For customers who keep their pools running through winter, weekly service includes testing free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity and reviewing the equipment for visible issues. Cyanuric acid and calcium hardness are tested monthly, and salt is checked on salt pools. The technician records the visit findings and emails a report with water readings, chemicals added, tasks completed, notes, equipment observations and a pool photo.
Kingfisher also repairs freeze damaged equipment. Before any repair begins, we provide a written estimate and explains the work proposed. For seasonal homes, discussing whether to maintain the pool year round or arrange winterization helps match the service to how the property will be used.
