A pool can look clean and still be out of balance. We explain why the CDC says testing matters more than looks.

The CDC notes that clear water can still carry germs. Learn why weekly water testing matters more than looks for your Las Vegas pool or spa.
Looks do not equal sanitation
Your pool water looks clear, the floor is visible, and nothing seems out of place. It is tempting to assume everything is fine, but appearance alone cannot tell you whether the water is properly maintained. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that clear water can still carry germs, which is why regular testing matters even when a pool looks clean.
The CDC recommends keeping free chlorine at least 1 part per million in pools, or at least 2 parts per million when cyanuric acid is used. For hot tubs, the recommendation is at least 3 parts per million of free chlorine, with water temperature no higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit. These are useful reference points when reviewing your pool or spa’s test results.
Hidden chemical imbalances
Chlorine is only part of the picture. The CDC recommends maintaining pool water pH between 7.0 and 7.8. A test also helps identify changes that are not obvious from the water’s appearance, including a buildup of cyanuric acid, commonly called stabilizer.
When tablets are used, cyanuric acid can build up over time. The CDC notes that high cyanuric acid makes chlorine work more slowly. If the level becomes too high, lowering it requires a partial drain. That is why checking the readings over time is more useful than judging the water by sight or adding chemicals without knowing what the water needs.
Hard water and dissolved solids
Las Vegas pool owners have another local consideration: the water used to top up the pool. The Las Vegas Valley Water District lists local tap water at 280 parts per million of total hardness, or 16 grains per gallon, with 75 parts per million of calcium. The district calls it very hard. These minerals come from the Colorado River through Lake Mead.
As water is added over time, topping up with hard water raises calcium levels. Hard water leaves calcium scale, especially along the tile line, inside heaters and on salt cells. Those are areas worth watching during routine service. The goal is to recognize changes in the water readings and visible scale before deciding whether additional treatment or cleaning is needed.
Commercial water regulations
Commercial pools have responsibilities beyond routine cleaning. The Southern Nevada Health District requires pool companies serving permitted aquatic facilities to be registered with the Health District, and qualified operators must hold a national pool operator certification.
Our commercial service includes scheduled maintenance, water testing and chemical logs for the facility, equipment service and written proposals following an assessment. Service does not replace the facility’s own qualified operator duties unless that responsibility is included in the contract.
How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps
For residential weekly service, Kingfisher records water readings rather than relying on appearance alone. Each visit includes testing free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity, with cyanuric acid and calcium hardness tested monthly. Salt is also tested on salt pools. The visit report is emailed after each stop and includes readings, chemicals added, completed tasks, technician notes, equipment observations and a pool photo.
If testing shows that a major chemical correction is needed, we provide a written estimate before the additional work begins. Routine chemicals are included in its maintenance plans, while specialty treatments are billed separately. This gives homeowners a record of what was measured and a clear explanation of any recommended extra work.
