The impact of Las Vegas monsoon storms

After a summer storm, a pool can look very different from the one you left that morning. Leaves may cover the surface, dust can collect in the water, and debris may be scattered around the equipment area. The National Weather Service in Las Vegas notes that the monsoon usually brings storms, strong winds and blowing dust in July and August. For pool owners, that makes a check after a storm a practical part of seasonal maintenance.

Start by looking at the amount of debris and the condition of the water, but do not rely on appearance alone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that clear water can still carry germs. It recommends free chlorine of at least 1 part per million in pools, or at least 2 parts per million when cyanuric acid is used. Testing helps establish what the water needs after the weather has passed.

Clearing debris and checking flow

Leaves and other debris need to be removed from the surface, skimmer basket and pump basket. These are routine parts of weekly pool care, but a heavy storm may leave more material than a normal visit would address. A look at the equipment also helps identify visible leaks, unusual noises or error codes that may need attention.

At Kingfisher Pool & Spa, routine visits include emptying skimmer and pump baskets and looking over the pump, filter, heater and timer or automation. Heavy debris after wind or monsoon storms is handled as a separate cleanup service. That distinction matters because a storm cleanup may involve additional work beyond the usual weekly checklist.

Filter cleaning and water chemistry

Once the loose debris is cleared, the filter and water readings deserve attention. Cartridge and DE filter cleaning is included four times a year on Kingfisher’s Full Care Plus plan. For other plans, filter cleaning is billed separately. If a storm has left the pool particularly dirty, the technician can assess the filter and explain whether additional cleaning is needed.

The CDC recommends a pH between 7.0 and 7.8. Kingfisher tests free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity at every weekly visit, adding routine chemicals as the readings call for them. Chlorine, acid for pH and alkalinity, and stabilizer are included in the maintenance plans. Specialty chemicals and major chemical corrections are billed separately when needed.

Southern Nevada water and evaporation

After cleanup, check whether the water level needs attention. The Southern Nevada Water Authority estimates that an average in-ground pool loses 48.6 gallons per square foot per year to evaporation. A typical 470 square foot pool in Southern Nevada can lose up to 22,842 gallons annually. These figures provide useful context for the water a pool may need over time.

There is also a local water quality consideration. The Las Vegas Valley Water District lists tap water at 280 parts per million of total hardness, or 16 grains per gallon, with 75 parts per million of calcium, and describes it as very hard. Topping up with hard water raises calcium over time, and hard water leaves scale along the tile line, in heaters and on salt cells.

How Kingfisher Pool & Spa helps

If lightning or high wind postpones a scheduled weekly visit, Kingfisher makes up the visit within the same week. On Full Care and Full Care Plus, technicians skim the surface, brush walls, steps and tile line, and vacuum where needed. Heavy storm debris cleanup is available separately from regular service.

Before extra work begins, we provide a written estimate. After every weekly visit, we email a report with water readings, chemicals added, tasks completed, technician notes, equipment observations and a photo of the pool. That record helps you see what was addressed and whether the technician identified anything that needs further attention.
